The mission history of Northside Baptist Church begins much earlier than the formation of the church in 1896.
Northside traces its missionary history to William Carey, who in 1792, at the Baptist Association meeting at Kettering, England, formed a Society for the Propagation of the Gospel Amongst the Heathen, later to be known as The Baptist Missionary Society. On the 14 November 1793 Carey and his missionary party arrived in Calcutta , India, the nation where Carey would dedicate more than 41 years of service to Christ.
Northside's connection to Carey is more than a tenuous historical link. It was to Carey;'s India that Northside sent its first missionary, Miss Effie Steed (daughter of the Rev David Steed), and it was the great, great, great grandson of William Carey, Rev C D Baldwin, who married Effie Steed in 1930.
Missionaries from Northside Baptist have served in India, the Sudan, Kenya, Zaire, North Borneo, Timor, Irian Jaya and Papua New Guinea.
Northside's missionaries have provided significant and sacrificial service to the Church of Jesus Christ. Together they have given more than 230 years of overseas service for Christ.
A full history of Northside's commitment to Global Mission is contained in the Centenary History of the Church. Copies are available on request. Also available: a 30 minute video entitled "One Hundred Years of Mission". This can be obtained from the Church Office at a cost of $A20 plus postage.
